My Experience at La Esquina Tapas..........17-06-2011

While we were in England we visited my brother and sister-in-law in Southampton as well. Even though we were in a foreign country we didn’t feel like typical cuisine from that country, so we found a cute Spanish restaurant instead. Last year we actually visited Spain with my brother so going to La Esquina Tapas with him was sort of like travelling down memory lane.
We arrived there quite late as we got stuck at another bar so we had to order immediately as the kitchen wanted to close. Seeing as it was a tapas restaurant we had the following:
Ensalada La Esquina - Pear and Blue Cheese salad
Plato de Serrano - Plate of Serrano Ham
Albondigas La Esquina - Meatballs in a rich tomato sauce
Champi al Ajillo - Mushrooms in garlic butter
Patatas Bravas – Diced fried potato in a spicy tomato sauce
Chorizo con Garbanzos – Spanish chorizo sausage with chickpeas
Calamares La Esquina – Crispy fried squid with salt and paprika
Paella La Esquina – House Paella rice, onion, chicken, peas, prawns and squid cooked in stock
And for dessert we had:
Tiramisu – Light whipped chocolate cream dessert with biscuit, coffee and brandy
Crema Catalana – Traditional Spanish custard dessert with crunchy sugar topping
All of the food was really good!! I absolutely love Spanish food! Just reading through this list again makes me want to go back! If you were blindfolded you wouldn’t know that you were eating in the UK as the food tastes like it is straight from the shores of Spain. One of my favourites was the Serrano Ham. We were lucky enough to have it again for breakfast the next morning, wrapped around some sweet melon.

My Experience at Cafe Orca..........Coming Soon

My experience at Ons Huisie..........06-08-2011

I was invited to Ons Huisie for a friend’s birthday celebration. I had been to Ons Huisie before but only for their breakfast, which was really good so I was looking forward to tasting their dinner menu. It was one of those cold winter nights but it quickly became nice and cozy once they brought out the gas heaters. As you might know Ons Huisie is actually a National Monument. It is believed that Federick Louis Stadler was the owner of Ons Huisie in the 1800’s, shortly after the Battle of Blouberg took place. You will see the street on which Ons Huisie is located was named after Federick.
When inside it almost feels like you have travelled back in time as the house still has that old fisherman’s feel to it with the thick walls build from crushed shells and roughly plastered with a thatch roof. Seeing as Ons Huisie is a restored house it doesn’t consist of one large dining area but rather a few smaller areas/rooms. Our waitress was extremely friendly and helpful and never left us unattended or waiting on anything for long. Ons Huisie can also be hired as a wedding venue. It is situated right on the beach, which gives for a beautiful wedding reception backdrop. It can seat up to 80 guests and there is a nice old church right across the road of it. At the back of the restaurant they also have a bar area with a few tables that can be hired for private functions.
For some starters we ordered two Wippertal Basket: Chicken strips, cheeseballs, vegetable spring rolls, Bobotie bites, beef samoosas and chips, served with chili mayo and sweet chili sauce and two Ons Huisie Kombuisie: Spicy chicken wings, deep fried calamari and chips, served with sweet chili and tartar sauce.
For mains I could not decide between the Ostrich Bobotie: Served with vegetables of the day, rice, mango chutney and beetroot and the West Coast Potjie: Calamari, prawns, line fish and mussles in a creamy curry sauce, served with rice and a poppadum. In retrospect I think I should have gone for the Bobotie instead. Not because I didn’t enjoy the Potjie, I just LOVE Bobotie and I can’t make it myself so I almost always order it when I see it on a menu. Actually to be totally honest, I have never tried to make Bobotie, so maybe instead of ordering it at every restaurant I should just learnt to make a kick ass Bobotie and then I won’t continuously be in search of the perfect Bobotie!! Anyway, the Potjie was nice. The curry wasn’t too hot and didn’t overwhelm the flavour of the seafood. Later on when I looking around on the internet I noticed that the two meals I could not decide between were both of the chef’s specialty list! No wonder I had a hard time making up my mind!
My partner had the Calamari: Succulent deep friend or Cajun style calamari served with vegetables of the day, accompanied with chips or rice and tartar sauce. He opted for the Cajun style version but I (and everyone else) couldn’t help but notice that the grilled calamari looked very pale when it arrived at the table. I am used to Cajun style calamari appearing red. Although it was extremely pale it was so tender and juicy.
Later on in the evening I realized that they were playing Afrikaans music in the restaurant! So funny!! I think I recognized one of the songs as Liefling from Ge Korsten!! Ha Ha!
Overall it was a nice experience. This would be the place to go if you are looking for a relaxed non pretentious seafood evening. Be it with a large group or an intimate dinner for you and your loved one.

My Experience at Galbi..........11-08-2011

It was a friend of mine’s turn to choose where we would go for dinner and she suggested Galbi. I had never heard of them so I found their website to have a look. After having been there now, I can say that their website does not do them justice! The website appears too dark and is nothing like the restaurant which is painted in vibrant warm reds, yellows and oranges. Entering off Bloem Street you walk thru this stunning little walkway decorated by vine leaves and fairy lights. As you walk in you immediately notice the copper pipes hanging from the roof surrounded by Chinese lanterns. All of which, work together perfectly to give a warm firey feel to the place. The dark heavy wooden benches you sit at also provide that earthy feel. So it is almost like you are sitting around a camp fire braaing with your mates! I absolutely love how they have decorated this place!
Galbi was started by two friends, Louis Smit and Coenraad Groenewald. Coenraad is the chef while Louis is your host. We went on a Wednesday night so they weren’t that busy. There were probably about 12 other people in the restaurant apart from us 8. There are also no other waiters except Louis. I am not sure if they employ someone else during the busier seasonal months as I recon Louis will be running around like a headless chicken if the place had to be full. Although that said, the customers do not require that much attention seeing as you are kept busy preparing your food. Louis was extremely helpful and very friendly. Something that I thought was brilliant is that they have a button on your table that calls the waiter! Therefore no one can complain that the waiter is not paying them enough attention as they can call him very easily and Louis also doesn’t need to stand around wondering if a table needs him. So with this method in place I suppose they can get away with having only one waiter.
You can order bits and pieces from the menu but they also had two set menu’s for the evening namely the Korean Set menu for R220 (which is more traditional) and the Mixed Set menu for R250 (which is more westernized).

It is a set menu for two people with the Korean Set being a two course and the Mixed set a three course dinner. We decided on the Korean Set Menu. This included:
Starters:
Garlic Bread, Mushroom shots: Button mushrooms with grated parmesan cheese, Two Halloumi cheese and tomato kebabs
Main meal:
400g of meat (Pork and/or Rump)
Daegi Galbi: Pork Belly strips marinated in a spicy marinade consisting of chilli paste, soybean paste, onion and garlic.
Beef: Rump strips marinated in a fruity and smoky Korean Marinade.
Samgyeopsal: Pork Belly strips not marinated.

Side dishes:
Jalapeno’s, Fancy Lettuce: To make little wrap, Kimchi: A spicy fermented Korean Cabbage, Sigumchi: Korean spinach blanched and tossed with soy sauce, sesame oil and garlic, Sweet Potato Fries: Twice fried and paired with a jalapeno dipping sauce, Doenjang Jigae: A Korean soup with Soybean paste, potato, baby marrow, chilli and tofu and Two bowls of sticky Asian Rice.
All of this is also served with the following condiments:
Onions, garlic, chilli, Ssamjang sauce (A spicy Korean sauce with chilli, garlic, onions and soybean paste)
Seeing as the chef doesn’t actually do the cooking the only way in which he can contribute to the flavour of your meal is by means of the marinade. We opted for 200g marinated beef and 200g of the marinated pork. Seeing as the pork meat is from the belly you can cook it until it is nice and crispy! The meat was extremely soft and the marinade really gave it a great taste. The jalapeno’s were quite strong as their seeds were still inside, but manageable. The Kimchi was very flavourful but was way too spicy for me so I didn’t really have too much of it. However, I was told that a little bit of kimchi is also used in the Doenjang Jigae soup and this soup was freaking amazing!! They bring you the soup and the rice at the end because Louis said that it is seen more as a dessert?!!? So by this time I was already quite full as you can see how much food you get, but this soup was truly yum!!! I basically ate the whole bowl by myself!!
I love sweet potato fries but I am afraid these were really not the nicest ones I have had. These guys should do themselves a favour and pop by Royale Eatery to try their sweet potato fries!! I thought they were too thin, which resulted in them being limp. The jalapeno dipping sauce accompanying it didn’t work too well as it wasn’t sticking to the fries once dipped. The Ssamjang sauce was delicious!!! It had just the right amount of bite followed with a little hint of sweetness.  I almost ate this on everything! Very good!
My friends had the Mixed Set and they choose some additional warthog meat. I didn’t expect warthog to be so soft and juicy! Definitely ordering warthog next time I see it on a menu!
I thought the wines were a bit pricey though. The cheapest bottle of red wine was R120 going up until R180. One grill per 6 people is a bit small. It should be 4 people maximum per grill.
We also had the Creamy Quesadillas: White Chocolate wrapped in rolled cinnamon pastry perfection, served with raspberry cool as dessert. Louis comes and grills it for you which is a nice touch. This creamy quesadilla was amazing! Think warm crispy quesadilla, filled with runny melted white chocolate and cinnamon. It tastes like Christmas!
If I could give future patrons some advice, order earlier than you normally would in a restaurant as you still have to cook it yourself and of course you get even hungrier once the raw food is in front of you. Seeing as you are making your own food it takes longer to eat, which also makes it more social and you don’t end up stuffing yourself.
It was great to try something new for a change. They have really managed to minimize the amount of staff they need by managing their restaurant this way! It is very effective. The menu currently on their website is an old one so you might not find all the dishes I mentioned there, but Coenraad ensures me that the new and improved menu will be up in no time!

My Experience at The Black Horse..........19-06-2011

Throughout our short trip to England we said that we simply cannot return home without having had a traditional English pub lunch, so we kept this for our last day in England. It was a slightly sunny day but the threatening clouds were constantly near. Seeing as we were staying in Reigate and flying out from Gatwick our “tour guide” suggested a pub in Reigate known as The Black Horse. We tempted the lurking clouds and opted to sit outside. I popped my head inside the pub to see what it looked like and it had that typical cozy pub feeling! J
We were ravished and ordered starters almost immediately. We had Goat’s Cheese & Caramelised Red Onion Tart: Served with salad garnish and balsamic and port dressing, Deep-fried Brie: Lightly breaded brie with a cranberry sauce and salad garnish and the Filo Prawns.
What is it about fried cheese that is just so damn good!? The Goat’s Cheese Tart was delicious! The soft gooey goat’s cheese on top of this crispy pastry tart with the slightly sweet flavour of the balsamic and port dressing was a perfect combination!
Although the Brie Cheese was deep fried, it didn’t taste like a deep fried heavily battered dish. The texture of the crumbs was just right. Once again the chunky cranberry sauce provided that little bit of necessary sweetness when eating such a fragrant heavy cheese. But everyone knows pairing something sweet with a soft cheese is going to be a winner! The Filo Prawns cocktail was light and refreshing. Made you feel like you had ordered it straight from the sea!

For mains I had the Lamb roast of the day served with roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, seasonal vegetables and gravy, while my partner had the Beef version and one of my friends had the Locally Sourced Sausage of the Week served with mashed potatoes, seasonal vegetables and red-onion gravy a.k.a Bangers and mash.

While placing our orders I actually didn’t notice that they had “Bangers and Mash” on the menu seeing as it wasn’t actually called bangers and mash. Had I seen that I would have definitely had that instead. Sausage and mash are amongst my favourite things in the world! So to semi solve my problem I just ordered a side portion of mash with my lamb roast, to soak up all that gravy goodness. The roasts were really soft and tender. It literally fell apart in your mouth. However, I am not such a big fan of the Yorkshire pudding.  When I hear the word pudding I think dessert, not little bowl made of dough. The same goes with what they call Black Pudding! When I hear that I “see” a thick rich chocolate dessert so full of chocolate goodness that it appears black! Yeah, totally misinterpreted that one! Although I like sausage, I prefer it without hardened blood thanks! The meal was great but I did find the gravy a bit too strong though. I suppose it is not something that I would eat every day.
Overall it was a very great experience of English cuisine. The staff was extremely friendly and the rain also managed to stay away, which was an added bonus! J

My Experience at Best of Asia..........28-07-2011

A friend and I were looking for some cheap sushi one Thursday night. After googling a few sushi specials she suggested Best of Asia in Kloof Street. She said they got take away sushi from there quite often and it is good. So off to Kloof Street we went. There are a few tables on the edge of the restaurant but the conveyor belt station is the main set up in the middle of the place. Sushi in different coloured plates goes around on the conveyor belt and you just take which ever one’s you feel like. They had a special on the night where you get three plates of the same colour for the price of two. So if you want to make the best of this special you shouldn’t just willy nilly order sushi but try and order 3 plates of the same colour at a time.
If there is something on the menu that you would like and you cannot see it on the conveyor belt you can ask the chefs in the middle to make it for you, which is nice as this ensures really fresh sushi. This place had some sushi that I had never seen before. One of the things they had, which I felt would cause some sushi chefs to turn in their graves, were a lot of fried tempura sushi. I thought the whole point of sushi was supposed to be super healthy!!? Anyway, they had tempura fried fashion sandwiches! Very strange! Needless to say those were the plates left at the end of the night that no one wanted to eat. They clearly don’t understand that if people wanted fried unhealthy food they would not come to a sushi joint.
The nine plates of sushi that we had were Prawn Fashion Sandwiches, Salmon Fashion Sandwiches, Tuna Fashion Sandwiches, Prawn Tempura Rolls, Wasabi Pastel, Rainbow California Rolls, Tempura Spicy Maki, Salmon California rolls and Tuna California rolls. By the end of this I was completely stuffed!!! Two of the sushi types that were unusual here was the Wasabi Pastel and the Tempura Spicy Maki. The Wasabi Pastel was actually quite good. It consisted of square slices of salmon and avo and rice stacked on top of each other finished off with a dash of mayo and “caviar” like you would find on top of salmon roses. The Tempura Spicy Maki I thought was actually a waste of kilojoules. It is maki that has been deep fried in tempura batter. I didn’t really see the point of this one at all.
Overall, the sushi wasn’t too bad, and the fact that it was so cheap didn’t hurt. I would however not make this one of my local sushi places. Maybe because I am too loyal to my already local sushi restaurant. Some of the sushi pieces lacked quality workmanship. On some of the pieces you could see that the avo was already browning and on other pieces where the salmon should have covered the whole sushi piece it only covered part of the piece.

My experience at Beluga..........05-08-2011

I usually only go to Beluga on a Sunday for their half price sushi and cocktail special as that is just the best special ever, but one Friday evening a friend invited us to Beluga for her birthday dinner. Seeing as the sushi special wasn’t in place I figured this would be the perfect opportunity to try their normal menu. Another special that they have for winter is a two course lunch for R120 or a three course dinner or lunch for R160. So we gave this dinner special a go.
For starters we had The Sushi Selection: Salmon Sashimi and Rainbow Roll and the Springbok Carpaccio: Dressed with a chilli reduction, baby leaves and a parmesan crisp. The sushi was good as usual, even though she brought me Salmon Roses (the sushi I like the least) with my Rainbow Rolls instead of the Sashimi. The Carpaccio was actually quite bland and was lacking that distinct Carpaccio meaty flavour.
For mains we had Slow-braised Shoulder of Lamb: Tender lamb with buttered mash, roasted vegetables, and a lamb reduction and the More than a Beef Wellington: A mouth-watering combination of fillet, duck liver pate, puff pastry and a beef reduction. The lamb was so extremely tender that I could have cut it with a spoon. The mash was deliciously creamy with the rich meaty lamb reduction. The only downside was that half way thru my meal I discovered a couple fatty chunks in my lamb meat. That wasn’t very pleasant as at a stage it felt like I had put Vaseline on my lips mid meal. The beef in the Beef Wellington was extremely soft and tender contrasted by the slightly crispy puff pastry.

Lastly for dessert we had the White Chocolate Beignets: Served with creamy vanilla ice cream and butterscotch sauce and Chocolate Sundae: Lindt white and dark chocolate, chocolate chips cookies and toasted nuts. The White Chocolate Beignets were delicious as usual. The Sundae was decadent! I mean what more could you ask for in a Sundae than thick chocolate and vanilla ice cream with chunks of lindt chocolate and cookies.
The service wasn’t too great as the waitress wasn’t the friendliest. Although this experience wasn’t 100% spectacular I will definitely be back, but most likely only for the sushi.

My experience at Ile de Pain..........10-07-2011

While we were staying in Knysna for the Oyster Festival we were looking for a cute little place to go and have some wholesome breakfast at. A friend of ours told us about this awesome spot in Thesen Island that also sells breads. They said that whenever they go to Knysna they buy quite a few loafs of bread from this place and then freeze it at home. That is how good it is! Ile de Pain is co-owned by Liezie Mulder and Markus Farbinger and is the first artisan wood fired oven bakery in South Africa.
So after our friend’s recommendation, we found ourselves taking a drive towards Thesen Island looking for Ile de Pain, which is French for Island of bread. When we arrived there were tons of people. I wasn’t feeling very confident that we would get a table anytime soon as there were already people queuing for tables. It felt like I was queuing outside this popular club trying to get in! J One thing that counted in our favour was that we were only 4 people and most of the people waiting in front of us were much larger groups.
Initially they told us it would take 45 minutes to be seated and while we were still deciding if we were going to stay they called my name! For a second I thought they meant someone else with the same name but I wasn’t going to argue with the women!!

We got a table inside against the window. The interior of this place is so cutely decorated. I felt like a little kid in a candy store just staring around at everything! They have decorated the ceiling with branches and in between there are lights hanging at different levels, alongside dangling ribbons with baking aids and fake (well we decided it is fake although it looked very much real) bread rolls from them.
While we were waiting for our friends to arrive we played the game “try matching the food being served with its description on the menu”. Initially when I read the menu is saw their Brioche French toast with berry compote and mascarpone cream and not too much later I saw a few fly by me to another table! I was literally drooling!! But my healthy living nagging fairy was sitting on my shoulder that morning saying, “You can’t have that for breakfast, it is more like dessert!” Seeing as I had done a freaking half marathon the previous day and could hardly walk from my calves being in so much pain I should have back handed that bloody fairy right off my shoulder and treated myself, because ever since then I have been dreaming about that bloody meal!! Next time I go to Knysna I am running straight to Ile de Pain to have my bloody French toast! :-)
I ordered the Green Envy – Whole grain bread, lightly toasted with soft scrambled eggs, basil pesto, rocket, shaved parmesan, drizzled with pumpkin seed oil, my partner had the Companio – poached eggs, spinach and bacon on companion toast with tomato relish and a friend of ours had the Max Deluxe – toasted ham and cheese, poached egg, cherry tomatoes and mushroom sauce. Out of those three meals I think the Max Deluxe was the winner. My scrambled egg part of my Green Envy was good but I was extremely upset that the bread that came with it looked so dull and thin in comparison to the breads that I saw coming with all the other meals. But it is totally my fault though; I didn’t read the menu properly and ordered the wrong thing. I had order envy!! How ironic that my meal was called green envy but I was the one being envious of the other people’s meals and not them of mine! J
They also had homemade lemonade on the menu which was extremely refreshing! We wanted to buy some bread to take home seeing as it was so amazing but they were sold out already and they only make one batch and they are closed on Mondays. Seeing as there were no bread to buy I still felt the need to buy something, so with my face pressed up against the glass window drooling over all the little tarts I settled for an oatmeal and raisin cookie, which was amazing!!!

Overall it was a very nice experience and I will definitely go back there again next time I am in Knysna (to hunt down my French toast)! J
They also have a sister restaurant in just opposite from the Waterfront called Mon Petit Pain (044-302 5767). Their set up works a bit different to Ile de Pain’s. They mainly have sandwiches and you order at the counter and then find a table to sit down at, if you want to sit down. Their motto is, “Think slow food served fast.”

My Experience at Groote Post..........23-07-2011

One Saturday morning we were en route to Paternoster for “mommy-in-law’s” birthday party weekend, when we decided to stop of at Groote Post wine farm for a little wine tasting. When we got to the farm’s tasting room we were the only people there so we got Frikkie van Zyl’s undivided attention. He is extremely knowledgeable about the wines and has a good sense of humour as well.
After spending about an hour there tasting numerous different types of great Groote Post wines we decided on the spur of the moment to stay for a bite to eat. Best impulsive decision ever made! Frikkie walked us over to the restaurant, which is situated opposite the tasting room. The restaurant is located inside an old farm house. We sat in one of the many sections (a.k.a rooms) of the restaurant (a.k.a old farm house). Even the bathrooms are fully equipped bathrooms with showers and baths! So funny! Having smaller different rooms as oppose to one large dining area is nice in the sense that the restaurant doesn’t need to be full in order to give you that cozy feeling. There is nothing worse than eating in an empty restaurant. When full, it can seat up to 120 guests. It was a sunny winter’s day so it wasn’t really cold outside, but I can imagine that this place must be so nice and cozy in the colder winter months.
Around you the place is decorated with things from our granny’s era like old brass pots and steel irons. The meals are also very hands on, as you can see it has been made with time and care from scratch. Sitting there waiting for our food made me feel like we were settling down at my grans house for a Sunday lunch. Oh how I miss those days! Our waitress was an elderly coloured lady, she was so sweet. At first we were the only people eating there but later another couple joined. You could see they were regulars as they ordered immediately and they knew the waiter and the chef.
The menu was small, which is nice. I prefer smaller menu’s because I feel then the chef really has the opportunity to perfect the dishes. There is nothing worse than a menu that is so freaking big that you need a smoke break mid-way thru reading it. Then ordering something to eat just becomes too much work. Although their menu is small it does change regularly. For their meals they use only the freshest produce, most of which is locally sourced and grown.
For mains my partner and I had the Old Man’s Steak Roll with Garlic Creme and hand cut chips and my fellow diners had the Chicken Korma pie, Penne with Neapolitana Sauce, and the Tomato and Camembert Tart and West Coast Fish Cakes with Sweet Chili starters.
The Chicken Korma pie was good, but the pastry was a little bit oily. The Penne with Neapolitana Sauce was nice but nothing special. The West Coast Fish Cakes with Sweet Chili were rather plain but the Tomato and Camembert Tart was amazing! The person who had this could not stop going on about how much he was enjoying it!!

I still think, no wait, I KNOW my meal took the prize hands down! I am sure as the waitress put down that meal everyone else immediately had order envy!! J When we ordered this meal we still asked the waitress if the steak was a minute steak and she said no it is a proper steak, but we were still skeptical!
No way was I ready for what I was about to taste. It totally blew every single expectation I had, completely out of the park!! The bun was just crispy enough on the outside to prevent it from being too tough to cut and on the inside it was so soft.

On the inside of the top part of the roll they had put some sauce. I am not sure what it was but it was really good! The steak and that garlic crème!!! There was about 4 pieces of little steaks (fillet steak!!) on this roll!!! Perfectly medium rare!! Mmmm just thinking about it now makes me want to dash thru to Groote Post and order one!! I didn’t see what that other couple ate that quickly popped in but I can now see why people would come back for this restaurant’s meals. I would go there especially for that steak roll. And the fact that they make really good wine as well is an added bonus. J
The steak was so so good, it breaks my heart that I had to give a piece away because I simply could not fit it inside my belly! Usually I like nice thick potato wedges but the steak was so good that I hardly paid attention to the potato wedges!! I can with the utmost confidence say that I have NEVER had such a good steak roll!! And I will struggle to find one that can compete (not even to mention how near to impossible it would be to find one to beat this one) with this steak roll! I am so thankful that I don’t stay too far from this farm so that I can go pop by there for a quick steak roll on a Saturday afternoon!! J That garlic crème was something out of this world. I usually hate mayo type dressing but this I couldn’t get enough off.

So overall this was a very, unexpected and unplanned, great experience. Being Afrikaans, it took me straight back to my roots! They will definitely be seeing me again!
