My experience at Beluga..........05-08-2011

I usually only go to Beluga on a Sunday for their half price sushi and cocktail special as that is just the best special ever, but one Friday evening a friend invited us to Beluga for her birthday dinner. Seeing as the sushi special wasn’t in place I figured this would be the perfect opportunity to try their normal menu. Another special that they have for winter is a two course lunch for R120 or a three course dinner or lunch for R160. So we gave this dinner special a go.
For starters we had The Sushi Selection: Salmon Sashimi and Rainbow Roll and the Springbok Carpaccio: Dressed with a chilli reduction, baby leaves and a parmesan crisp. The sushi was good as usual, even though she brought me Salmon Roses (the sushi I like the least) with my Rainbow Rolls instead of the Sashimi. The Carpaccio was actually quite bland and was lacking that distinct Carpaccio meaty flavour.
For mains we had Slow-braised Shoulder of Lamb: Tender lamb with buttered mash, roasted vegetables, and a lamb reduction and the More than a Beef Wellington: A mouth-watering combination of fillet, duck liver pate, puff pastry and a beef reduction. The lamb was so extremely tender that I could have cut it with a spoon. The mash was deliciously creamy with the rich meaty lamb reduction. The only downside was that half way thru my meal I discovered a couple fatty chunks in my lamb meat. That wasn’t very pleasant as at a stage it felt like I had put Vaseline on my lips mid meal. The beef in the Beef Wellington was extremely soft and tender contrasted by the slightly crispy puff pastry.

Lastly for dessert we had the White Chocolate Beignets: Served with creamy vanilla ice cream and butterscotch sauce and Chocolate Sundae: Lindt white and dark chocolate, chocolate chips cookies and toasted nuts. The White Chocolate Beignets were delicious as usual. The Sundae was decadent! I mean what more could you ask for in a Sundae than thick chocolate and vanilla ice cream with chunks of lindt chocolate and cookies.
The service wasn’t too great as the waitress wasn’t the friendliest. Although this experience wasn’t 100% spectacular I will definitely be back, but most likely only for the sushi.

Yours in fun & food,
