My experience at Yindee's..........29-07-2011

A friend of mine was looking for a last minute restaurant to go to for her birthday dinner on a Friday night. She came across Yindee's. When I used to live in Kloof Street about 5 years ago I used to drive past Yindee's every day and I always wanted to go there, but as a student I thought it was a bit out of my budget. To be honest I was actually surprised when she said we were going to Yindee's as I didn’t know they were still around. It was never really a restaurant you hear people talking about. Anyway, seeing as I had always wanted to try it I was glad when she said we were going there for dinner. Seeing as it was her birthday I wanted to surprise her with some birthday cupcakes. I gave the restaurant a call to see if they would be ok with my bringing dessert into their restaurant and they were really great about it!
While looking at the menu to decide what to order I felt extremely overwhelmed! The menu is just way too big! I am a lazy reader so when I see a massive menu I always feel demotivated. I ended up quickly scanning thru the menu choosing three possible meals (Ped Pha’: Deboned half duck, sliced and tossed in a sweet tamarind and chilli herb sauce, Ped Sawann: Deboned half duck coated with a heavenly peach sauce or Steamed Fillet of Kingklip: Fillet of Kingklip steamed with mushroom, ginger, spring onion in a light soya sauce.) I then asked the waiter to suggest the best one out of the three and he said I should have the first duck dish, which is what I did. Next to this dish on the menu it states that this dish is a wild exotic experience in flavour unique to Yindees. I was afraid that the other duck meal would be too sweet. These main meals do not come with anything so I ordered a portion of steamed jasmine rice on the side. This meal was really tasty; it had just the right amount of chilli to keep your taste buds tantalized and not cause your nose to start running and your tongue to go num. The sauce was also just sweet and sticky enough to perfectly complement the soft vs crispy texture of the duck.

The service was really great as well! Friendly and fast! They even brought the birthday girl a dessert (Ice Cream Tord: Coconut coated deep fried vanilla ice cream) on the house. The ice cream was really good but I am not the biggest lover of coconut so that I felt was a bit off putting, but of course that is just my personal taste. They also have a section where you can sit on the floor and eat. For something different it would be nice to try those tables next time! Overall a satisfying experience!

Yours in fun & food,
